The haystack series was begun in the autumn of 1888. The first five studies were made of wheat stacks belonging to a farmer in the Clos Morin. With the late summer harvest he was able to complete a total of twenty-five canvases, which were shown by Durand-Ruel in the summer of 1891. The exhibition was a spectacular success.
